Feb 16, 2011 3:20 PM | Brute Squad vs Rocktown: Brute Squad is stepping up to make a run as an A team in the Cold Classic. Rocktown is a team that has been around since 07-08’ and is familiar to the tourney setting. Brute Squad has a gun-slinging quarterback in #16 who will look to connect with go to wide receiver #8, Philly. Rocktown is lead by quarterback #17 who is a dual threat and likes to work outside the pocket. Rock #17 has one of the biggest deep threats in the tourney in #88, Loone. Defensively, I have to give the advantage to Rocktown because of the physical rush and experience. Brute Squad must take what they can get and not force the issue because Rocktown will capitalize on mistakes.

VA Pirates vs River City: (ROUND 1 GOTW) The red and white are back to avenge what even they would consider a disappointing showing at the state tourney. River City is another team that knows the ins and outs of the flag game and relies on team defense and big play offense. Offensively, River City has an accurate gun-slinging quarterback in #9 “Spiker”. Spiker has one of the 804’s best receiving cores: RC #3, RC#1, and Paul will be open versus any defense. Defensively this team relies on a speed rush and flag pulling. Definitely an offensive minded team, pressure on the quarterback is a must; no pressure equals a loss. Curtis and company are back to keep things rolling after a good showing in the B tournament. I do not know too much about these guys but what I did see at the state showing is VAP#1 is a monster. It should be interesting match-up between these two teams because they are both vets and have playmakers on both sides of the ball. VA Pirates defensive backfield vs the River City wide receiver core is where this one will be won. This one will be close but I have to go with what I know…
River City by 7.
Da Unit vs Soldiers: Breed Love and company are a veteran team who always finish in the top 5 at states. This team is one of the more experienced offenses that rely on the quarterback creating time for his athletic receivers to find openings. Solider has always been known for their defense and physical play. Defensively they have one of the best corners in the state in #19 and the rush is always on smash. Keep they’re defense guessing by throwing in different looks forcing adjustments because they’re defense is money. Da Unit has crazy athletes and has overall team speed. I hope these two teams color coordinate uniforms. Da Unit’s offense is key in this one. In a low scoring affair…

PBR vs Ruff Ryders: Although these guys do not look the part, Poor Boys-Ruckus is official. Another team that has years of experience, and a MO for beating teams with their offensive/defensive fronts. This team is lead by quarterback #7 “Davey” who is infamous for making rushers miss and finding open guys downfield. PBR offensive line is one of the best in the state. Defensively this team relies on flag pulling and switching schemes at the right time. PBR is definitely a top 5 team in this tourney and is fully capable of taking the title home. Stop, Drop, Shut Em’ Down, Open Up Shop! Ruff Ryders are here and are lead by quarterback #5. #5 is a good quarterback will need time to be effective. #5 will be looking to hook up with #4 and #1 the truth…on thing is true this guy can play. On Defense RR#15 will need to have his motor going versus a very good o line in PBR. I think this one has potential to be close but I think PBR is too much in the trenches.
PBR wins by 10 or less.
M&G vs Stone Cold: M&G is coming off a one and done at states but lets not forget a B championship the year before. M&G are unassuming group with a deceptively decent quarterback who needs to eat something ASAP! Defensively they have a tough rush and stick to a cover 2. Standing in their way in Round 1 is Stone Cold. Stone Cold is coming off of a decent B tourney showing after losing to VA Pirates by 7. Stone Cold gets the nod for athleticism in this one. Stone Cold does not have the flag smarts to match the experience of M&G.
M&G wins by more than 10.
DMOB vs Sharks: Dmob is probably the most experienced team in the tourney, and they very well could take them the whole way. This team has perfected the spread over the years and has one of the state’s best quarterbacks in Chauncey “Vick” Payne. Offensively C. Payne and company will score points versus the best of defenses. Defensively they rely on pressuring the opposing quarterback and forcing him into making quick throws to a lurking athletic secondary. Not sure who will be in the secondary with no Joe, TC, or TW. I am sure whoever they have in the secondary will be ready to go. I am assuming they are talking about the Tidewater Sharks? If so, they have a conventional offense with speedy guys at wide receiver. Dmob is a tough draw for any team in the classic.

Firm vs Imposters: The National Champs are in the building! Overall the most balanced team of the tournament. Jamar is one of the best quarterbacks playing in the classic mostly because of his accuracy and his ability to move. Athletes are all over the field for Firm and they should be around late in the tourney. Conventional offense is their strength but just as effective in a spread. That man is an Imposter! Look Imposters you have the toughest game of round 1 so the best thing to do is to rest your guys in Round 1 and hope for a better match up in the second round.
Firm by 20 or more.
The Truth vs Primetime: Primetime and Dmob in the classic? That’s neither here nor there, we got The Truth coming off a decent B tournament showing and Primetime who is rarely in tournaments but very good none the less. The Truth is lead by a one two punch backfield of quarterback #21 and running back/receiver #48. These two guys are good on their feet and can make things happen at any given moment. Giving #21 time in the backfield is a big and physical o line. Primetime is lead by one of, if not the most athletic players in the tournament in Joe “Twilight” Sanders. Joe and his cast of usual suspects will be all over the field with athleticism. Defensively Primetime has a physical and quick rush with a secondary full of playmakers with initials for names: PK, TC, TW, you get the point. The Truth has a secondary beast in #3 who is an all out athlete, he and the rest of The Truth defensive backs better be ready to play versus a very good Primetime team.

Westwood vs Team Hood: Veterans to flag game and the basketball style offense. This team is lead by quarterback #2 “Source” who is a veteran to this game and can beat teams by extending plays. Westwood has multiple athletes on offense and has designed a playbook to get the ball to them in many different ways. Defensively this team is physical and quick up front. To beat these guys you must have contained pressure on #2 and watch for the double, triple, quad pass. This team can beat anyone in the tourney and should have a good showing. Team Hood will be in for a tough one, being the first time playing against this style it will cause them some problems.
Westwood wins by 17 or more.
Alleykatz vs Speed Kills: Alleykatz are making their way down that 95 South to get in on the classic. These jokers look like they just got out of jail. At quarterback they are quick and strong armed. The have a few athletic receivers which will make the quarterback’s job that much easier. Athletically the have to big rushers...one of which looks like somebody you really wouldn`t want to run into in a dark alley. Speed Kills is a new team on the scene with crazy athletic ability. Big offensive line gives the “league’s slowest quarterback” time to find his usually wide open speedsters. Speed Kills must focus on limiting offensive risks and rely on athletic ability on defense. Alleykatz are too experienced to lose this one.
Alleykatz win by 14 or less.
