Here is my contribution to the VFFA website message board.
First, let me say this, VA has the best 8 man semi contact flag football in the country. Where else can you get 50 plus teams together to play great football in the cold.
This may have been my last state tournament and if it was, then it would be a fantastic way to leave it! I have been out here for the past 11 years and it`s been a blast. My flag career has lasted longer than my pro career(4yrs)LOL. I have appreciated the opportunity to compete against all of the guys.
Here is my account of the weekend from start to finish.
Saturday, Dec.10, 2pm- Kick off vs. Collision. We are excited about beginning our quest for state title number 6. The game goes pretty much as planned, but we started off very slowly. Second half was much better and the GUNZ collected our first ever shutout in the state tourney.
4pm- Next up are our boys from Richmond, Westwood. Westwood has had a great year. They were one of the best teams in our league this year. Westwood has never beaten the GUNZ. This game was no different. GUNZ win!
I go up to watch a little bit of the Firm/Primetime game. I`m surprised to see Primetime giving Firm the business! 804 style!
6:30pm- I tried to take my family out for a nice dinner at Olive Garden...it was so packed that I couldn`t even park. Had to go to Applebees. It was terrible!
Sunday, Dec. 11th, 9:30- I get out there to the field ready to play, but the "B" game is still going on. Poorboys and some team from Newport News. Poorboys seem to have the game in hand, but they blow a lead and lose in OT. I was surprised, I thought PB would win the title. The couple of "B" teams that I saw were all pretty good. Lots of athletes.
10:15 or so- we finally kick it off against Primetime. In typical GUNZ fashion, we start off slowly. We give up a garbage touchdown off a scramble play. We get stopped cold. We punt and it`s returned for a touchdown. We throw a pick. They score again. Before we know it, we`re down 19-0 about 15 minutes into the game. I`m thinking we can`t go out like this. We put a drive together and score with about 2 min. left in the half. B. Logan threw a helluva pass to D. Allen. Davon ran under it like he used to in HS. We got a big stop right before halftime. Score at half 19-7. We get the ball after half and score on a 4th goal from about the 35. Smy put up to Noonie, who made a spectactular juggling catch in the endzone. We kick off to PT and the ball looks like it`s going out of bounds. The ball bounces high and straight up. When it hits the ground we touch it first...Our ball at the 10. We`re down 19-14. Things are looking good. We have trouble on "O" and we got it going in reverse. This time we have 4th and goal from the 20 or so. We call a variation of a play we just ran and it works to perfection. Smy makes a perfect pass and Noonie makes another great catch in the endzone. Gunz lead 21-19. Just like that we have everything we want. Primetime came right back and scored a long TD. 25-21 Primetime. Gunz score again late to make it 28-25 GUNZ with about 1:30 left. With about 50 secs left. Playmaker Joe scrambles and is running free to the endzone, but instead of scoring, he kneels at 1. He doesn`t want to score too early and give the ball back to Smy and the GUNZ. It`s actually a good idea...run the clock out all the way and score with very, very little time remaining. I tried this before myself and it backfired on me. It was a game vs. D Mob and Joe was playing against us. We didn`t score. Joe should have known better. They didn`t score either. 1st down-took a knee, 2nd down-scramble incomplete pass, 3rd down-guy open in the endzone, but pass too late and too high incomplete, 4th down- scramble pass imcomplete...GUNZ win a lucky one. Better to be lucky than good!
1pm-State final vs. Triple Crown- Good game TC was tougher than I thought, but we had a little too much for them. GUNZ State Champs for 6th time overall and 4th year in a row.

Man, that was fun!!!

He was MVP of the 1995 Sugar Bowl, when the Hokies beat Ricky Williams and Texas, so he obviously knows a thing or two about football.
